Best Road Races - They Said It...No 5

“London is a bit tougher because so many athletes are going there. If I’m getting the same offer, same invitation, why would I go to London?

“There are very strong competitors there, tougher maybe than Paris, and I wanted to run an even pace. It was very important for me to win on my debut as well and maybe London is more difficult for that.”

40 Year Old Jo Pavey (GBR) Wins 10,000m Final

Jo Pavey won her first major championship gold medal at the age of 40 on August 12 in Zurich, and in the process became the oldest female European champion in history.

Ten days after the mother of two stunned Hampden Park to claim a “surreal” Commonwealth Games 5,000 metres bronze medal, she clinched the 10,000m at the Letzigrund Stadium in Zurich.

runiAge is just a number. 40 Year Old Jo Pavey from England won the 10,000m in Zurich last Tuesday. Way to go!! She ran 32:22. Bob Anderson

Sharon Vos: Three in a Row

Aging ever so gracefully at age 59 and forging a career record that becomes ever more impressive, Sharon Vos is named Ujena Fit Club Female Runner of the Year still again.

by David Prokop, Editor, Best Road Races

For the third year in a row, the Ujena Fit Club Female Runner of the Year is Sharon Vos of Greenwich, Conn., one of the Rouse triplets (their maiden name) – Shelley, Honor and Sharon – who have run faster in the marathon than any triplets in history.

Clearly, three is a number of more than passing significance to Sharon, and winning the Ujena Fit Club Runner of the Year award for the third year in a row is getting to be a habit – a very nice one! – as is her long-term involvement in running and racing.

In 2013 Sharon ran 33 races totaling 284 miles in distance, which gave her 23,038 points based on the formula used for the Ujena Fit Club men’s and women’s rankings – 100 points for each race posted (with finish time included), 20 points for each mile raced, and performance points – from 300 down to one – for any and all age-graded percentages ranking in the top 300 for the year!

Eating Well for Running

By Christine Rosenbloom

Heading to the gym after work for a quick workout? Out for a morning walk with the dogs? Working out is good for our physical and mental health. Although many individuals workout for weight loss or maintenance, exercising burns fewer calories than you might think. For example, you burn about 100 calories for every mile you walk or run. Yet, the average energy bar provides about 250 calories and a 16-ounce fruit smoothie has 350 to 400 calories, so it is easy to overdo it.

Here are some tips for fueling your workout without sabotaging the calorie-burning effort of exercise.

Pritz's Honor

By David Prokop, editor Best Road Races

The world’s most unusual race met the world’s most beautiful place, in the opinion of many, and Molly Pritz (photo below), Christine Kennedy and Adam Roach put their own emphatic, dramatic stamp of athletic excellence on the occasion.  (Photo above about a half mile out from the start.  Adam leading with Molly bringing up the rear.  Photos by Catherine Cross)

At the Pacific Grove Double, Sun., May 11 held in Pacific Grove California near Monterey, Molly Pritz, who’s 26, reclaimed the  women’s world record in the Double Road Race™ as she recorded an aggregate time of 52:13, running the opening 10K leg in 34:39 and the concluding 5K leg in 17:34 to break the previous world record by 10 seconds.
