Honolulu Marathon

The United Nations came to the 42nd Honolulu Marathon, Sun., Dec. 14, as foreign  runners – led by Kenyans Wilson Chebet and Joyce Chepkirui -- swept the top 10 places in both the men’s and women’s races on a rainy morning in Honolulu, Hawaii.

In all, runners from six different ... (continued...)

WELL PLAYED, MR. BEKELE

“London is a bit tougher because so many athletes are going there. If I’m getting the same offer, same invitation, why would I go to London?

“There are very strong competitors there, tougher maybe than Paris, and I wanted to run an even pace. It was very important for me to win on my debut as well and maybe London is more difficult for that.”

Sharon Vos: Three in a Row

Aging ever so gracefully at age 59 and forging a career record that becomes ever more impressive, Sharon Vos is named Ujena Fit Club Female Runner of the Year still again.

by David Prokop, Editor, Best Road Races

For the third year in a row, the Ujena Fit Club Female Runner of the Year is Sharon Vos of Greenwich, Conn., one of the Rouse triplets (their maiden name) – Shelley, Honor and Sharon – who have run faster in the marathon than any triplets in history.

Clearly, three is a number of more than passing significance to Sharon, and winning the Ujena Fit Club Runner of the Year award for the third year in a row is getting to be a habit – a very nice one! – as is her long-term involvement in running and racing.

In 2013 Sharon ran 33 races totaling 284 miles in distance, which gave her 23,038 points based on the formula used for the Ujena Fit Club men’s and women’s rankings – 100 points for each race posted (with finish time included), 20 points for each mile raced, and performance points – from 300 down to one – for any and all age-graded percentages ranking in the top 300 for the year!

A Word about Strength Training

Strength training is important for both conditioning and injury prevention. I lifted weights and/or use exercise machines regularly in the off-season when I was not competing seriously, but I limited strength training during the competitive season. It is wise to cut back on your strength training during the training mileage buildup. Light weights and high repetitions seem to work best for long distance runners. Do not overdo strength training if you want success as a runner. I recommend next to no lifting the last several weeks before an important race at the time when your training mileage is near peak. You may be able to continue lifting safely, but why take a chance?

Double Racing Has Truly Arrived!

by David Prokop (Editor Best Road Races)  Photo: Double 15k top three

Double Racing® is a new sport for runners that some competitors are calling the best running event ever, due to the unique and memorable experience of running it!

At San Juan Bautista on Sat., Sept. 20, the event, the atmosphere and the experience all came together as never before. There were two live bands, an ongoing barbecue presented by one of the main sponsors, Peacock Acres, a not-to-be-believed fruit spread laid out by Driscoll’s, a local fruit company, all of this going on within and contributing to a truly superb atmosphere for a unique competition that seemed perfectly designed for a picturesque little town like San Juan Bautista – and San Juan Bautista, in turn, looking like the picture perfect town to host such an event. An event called the San Juan Bautista Road Racing® Festival no less!

“More people need to see this,” one competitor said enthusiastically. “This is really exciting. I’ve never been part of anything like this!”
