Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run

Kenyan Stephen Sambu, 26, was an outstanding runner in college (he attended the University of Arizona), and now he’s just as impressive on the roads  -- if not more so!

On Sun., April 12 in Washington, D.C., he won the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10-Mile Run, which was shortened to 9.39 miles (or 15.1 kilometers) this year due to an emergency.

The slender Kenyan covered that distance in 43:20, which is 4:37 per mile pace!

Jacob Riley, 26, of Rochester, N.Y., ran a great race to finish second in 43:28.

Elisha Barno, 29, of Kenya was third in 43:31, and Daniel Salel, 29, also of Kenya, finished a close fourth in 43:34.

Last year Daniel Salel edged Stephen Sambu for first in this race as both were clocked in 45:29 for the full 10-mile distance.

In the women’s race on Sunday, Kenyans swept the top four places as Mary Wacera, 26, finished only inches ahead of Cynthia Limo, 25, as both were clocked in 48:35, Aliphine Tuliamuk-Bolton finished third in 49:20, and Monicah Wanjuhi Ngige, 21, was fourth in 49:54.

The 2012 race marks the eleventh year credit unions have sponsored the run in support of Credit Unions for Kids and the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Over $5 million dollars for children’s hospitals has been raised during this time. Join thousands of runners and over a hundred credit unions and credit union partners to help provide local kids with state-of-the-art care, cutting edge research and treatment for every disease and injury imaginable.
