Kauai Marathon

It was scenic but also warm and humid, with the result that a Masters runner was the men’s winner and two women finished second and third overall in the Kauai Marathon, Koloa, Hawaii, Sun., Sept. 6.

Allister Knox, 41, of Kihei, Hawaii ran 2:51:45 to win the men’s race by more than half an hour!

Tim Price, 25, of Bluffton, S.C., was second in 3:23:20 and Derrick Ledesma, 36, of Koloa third in 3:24:52.

Sabina Piras, 26, of San Diego, Calif., ran 3:06:36 to win the women’s race and finish second overall.

Nicole Chyr, 37, of Englewood, Colo., finished second in the women’s race and third overall as she ran 3:10:00.

Third place in the women's race went to Brooke Sugahara, 40, of Kapaa, Hawaii, who clocked 3:29:07.

The courses are USATF and AIMS certified. The 2011 Kauai Marathon, Half Marathon and Marathon Relay were a resounding success with multiple course records broken, the largest field boasted in race history and an abundance of aloha spread throughout the day. The performance of the morning came in the marathon from Tyler McCandless, 24, of Boulder, Colorado running 2:23:21 on an extremely challenging course in temperate conditions. He crushed the course record and won the Kauai Marathon Speed Challenge of a Sub-2:30. Trailed closely by 2010 winner, Michael Wardian, 37, of Arlington, Virginia who finished in 2:26:19. Both Americans eclipsed the elusive Sub-2:30 mark each earning a share of $15,000.

Course Description

The 4th Annual Kauai Marathon and Half Marathon begin in Poipu, the world-class resort community at the sunny southern end of the island and run the first 11 miles together. The courses follow the contour of the scenic coastline, offering magnificent views of the island\'s picturesque beaches, rugged volcanic peaks, and green tropical rain forests. As dawn breaks, runners will experience lush green vistas as they approach the shade of the century old Tunnel of Trees. The course then winds through misty Omao where the half marathon enters Kukuiula Resort offering spectacular ocean views for the last few miles. The full marathon heads out to Lawai before climbing to reveal stunning ocean views at the top of Kalaheo. The remaining miles are a gradual descent until runners receive a rousing island welcome upon their return to Poipu Beach.
