Kauai Marathon

It doesn’t happen very often, but it did at the Kauai Marathon in Hawaii, Sun., Aug. 31, where Nicole Chryr, 35, of Englewood, Colo., not only was the women’s winner in 3:00:24, but she also finished first overall!

The winner of the men’s race, Goya Hidemasa of Japan, was clocked in 3:01:30.

Chryr, who’s a Colorado native, dominated the women’s race all the way on this extremely challenging though scenic course, finishing almost half an hour ahead of the second-place finisher, Kaitlin Borror, Long Island City, N.Y., who ran 3:31:14

The third-place finisher was Amanda Kavingian, Arlington, Mass., who was clocked in 3:33:49.

After the race, Chryr said, “The Kauai Marathon is no joke of a race (it’s tough), but one of my favorites! Not just because it’s in Hawaii, but because of the tremendous support you receive along the entire course. Congratulations to every runner who raced today, and thank you to all the volunteers and staff who cheer us on and make this a great event.”

Nicole Chryr didn’t start running until she was in college, has a six-year-old son, works a full-time job, and still has time to train and excel as a runner. And she did something in the Kauai Marathon that most women runners (even the very best ones) rarely get a chance to do – finish first overall!

After the men’s winner Goya Hidemasa of Japan finished the men’s race in 3:01:30 on Sunday, he was followed to the line in fairly short order by Bobby Niska of Wheaton, Ill., who was second in 3:04:29, and Hiroyuki Makino of Japan, who crossed the finish line third in 3:08:30.

Tyler McCandless, 27, of Boulder, Colo., had won the Kauai Marathon the last three years, running 2:23:21 in 2011, 2:23:53 in 2012 and 2:21:33 in 2013. This year he opted to run the Kauai Half-Marathon and, as might have been expected, he obliterated the course record – no surprise there – by running 1:07:17.

Afterwards the Ph.D. doctoral candidate in meteorology said, “It was an honor to win the Kauai Half-Marathon this year and although I did not achieve my goal of breaking 1:05, I put every ounce of energy I had out on the course.”

Finishing second to Tyler in the half-marathon was Rich Hanna, Sacramento, Calif., who ran 1:16:49 to crush the 50-54 age-group course record.  J.T. Service of Santa Cruz, Calif., was third in 1:23:25. He won the inaugural Kauai Marathon in 2009.

The women’s winner in the Kauai Half-Marathon was Lauren Tippets, 29, of Los Altos, Calif., who ran 1:26:53. Sarah Vitug of Los Angles, Calif., finished second in 1:33:17, and Brooke Sugahara, who’s from Kauai, was third in 1:35:59.

The courses are USATF and AIMS certified. The 2011 Kauai Marathon, Half Marathon and Marathon Relay were a resounding success with multiple course records broken, the largest field boasted in race history and an abundance of aloha spread throughout the day. The performance of the morning came in the marathon from Tyler McCandless, 24, of Boulder, Colorado running 2:23:21 on an extremely challenging course in temperate conditions. He crushed the course record and won the Kauai Marathon Speed Challenge of a Sub-2:30. Trailed closely by 2010 winner, Michael Wardian, 37, of Arlington, Virginia who finished in 2:26:19. Both Americans eclipsed the elusive Sub-2:30 mark each earning a share of $15,000.

Course Description

The 4th Annual Kauai Marathon and Half Marathon begin in Poipu, the world-class resort community at the sunny southern end of the island and run the first 11 miles together. The courses follow the contour of the scenic coastline, offering magnificent views of the island's picturesque beaches, rugged volcanic peaks, and green tropical rain forests. As dawn breaks, runners will experience lush green vistas as they approach the shade of the century old Tunnel of Trees. The course then winds through misty Omao where the half marathon enters Kukuiula Resort offering spectacular ocean views for the last few miles. The full marathon heads out to Lawai before climbing to reveal stunning ocean views at the top of Kalaheo. The remaining miles are a gradual descent until runners receive a rousing island welcome upon their return to Poipu Beach.
