It was déjà vu all over again as Kenyans Jacob Chemtai and Nelson Oyugi finished 1-2 in the men’s race and Sarah Kiptoo won the women’s race in the picture-postcard beautiful Big Sur Half-Marathon on the Monterey coast of California, Sun., Nov. 16.
Although they ran slightly slower this year, Chemtai, 27, and Oyugi, 22, staged another exciting mano-a-mano battle at the front, finishing in 1:03:22 and 1:03:31 respectively.
Guor Maker, 30, of Flagstaff, Ariz., finished third in 1:05:52.
Last year Chemtai had won in 1:02:44 with Oyugi only six seconds behind in 1:02:50.
Sarah Kiptoo, 25, of Kenya repeated as the women’s winner, running 1:13:40 to finish well ahead of the second- and third-place finishers, Kara Foster, 24, of Boalsburg, Penn., and Kristen Zaitz, 33, of Broomfield, Penn., who ran 1:14:29 and 1:14:37 respectively.
Kiptoo had won last year in 1:11:21, which was her personal best for the half-marathon distance, but then again she didn’t have to push quite as hard to come out on top this year.
There were 7,070 finishers in this year’s Big Sur Half-Marathon, which easily makes it one of the biggest races in California -- and there is no race anywhere that offers a more scenic course!
