Kenyans dominated the Honolulu Marathon in Honolulu, Hawaii, Sun., Dec. 13 as Felix Kiprotich led a Kenyan sweep of the top five places in the men’s race and Joyce Chepkirui led a Kenyan sweep of the top three places in the women’s race.
There were 12,109 finishers in this scenic race that gives runners an extraordinary tour through some of Hawaii’s most gorgeous areas.
Felix Kiprotech, 25, was the men’s winner in 2:11:43, with Wilson Chebet, 30, the runner-up in 2:12:46 and Daniel Limo, 28, third in 2:13:24.
Robert Kwambai, 30, placed fourth in 2:15:27, and 43-year-old Kenneth Mungara completed the Kenyan sweep as he ran 2:18:36 to finish fifth!
There were no Americans in the top 10 of the men’s race.
Joyce Chepkirui, 27, of Kenya was the women’s winner in 2:28:34, with her countrywomen Lucy Karimi, 29, and Isabella Ochichi, 36, finishing second and third in 2:28:55 and 2:29:44 respectively.
In what was truly an international finishing order after that, Yingying Zhang, 25, of China was fourth (2:37:01), Wuynishet Girma, 29, of Ethiopia fifth (2:40:26), Aheza Kiros, 30, also of Ethiopia, sixth (2:47:37) and Eri Suzuki, 32, of Japan, seventh (2:47:43).
The first American finisher in the race was Maila Crouse, 34, of Edgewater, Colo., who placed eighth in 2:51:50.
