Benjamin Zywicki, 26, of Louisville, Colo., pulled away late to win the Anthem Richmond Marathon, Sat., Nov. 15, in Richmond, Va. He ran a personal best of 2:18:35 to upset pre-race favorites Hillary Too, 35, and Kennedy Kemei, 36, of Kenya.
Too, the winner of this race last year, finished second in 2:18:35, and Kemei, who set the course record of 2:13:45 in winning this race in 2011, was third in 2:22:13.
Ethiopian Tilahun Manesho, 27, finished fourth in 2:25:06.
In the women’s race, which was dominated by Africans, Waynishet Abebe, 27, of Ethiopia crossed the finish line in 2:39:26 to win by 26 seconds over Mahlet Melese, 24, also of Ethiopia, who ran 2:39:52.
The next two finishers were Kenyans Meagan Nedlo and Ruth Kimutai, both 32, as they ran 2:40:48 and 2:45:06 respectively.
The Anthem Richmond Marathon, held annually in Virginia’s capital, has been called America’s Friendliest Marathon. This year’s race was run under cool conditions as the temperature never climbed above the 40s. There were 5,094 finishers in the race.
